How to choose the best eReader for you!
So you want to get an eReader but you don't know where to start? You're in luck!! This guide will give you all you need to know about finding the perfect eReader for you!
I am a HUGE eReader fan. My husband got me the kindle paperwhite as a birthday present in 2018 and it completely changed my reading habits. For one, I largely get my reading done at night before falling asleep and as any other cohabiter knows, trying to read with the light on while your partner is trying to sleep does not always work out in favor of your book. In comes the kindle! No more need for reading lights. No more complaints about the lights being on! What a dream!
Secondly, so many books, so little weight & space! An eReader is perfection for travel or for those of you (me included) who like to bring a book everywhere. They barely take up any space and can hold thousands of books! Mind. Blown. Never be without your book again!
Lastly, the dictionary feature. This is legit the best. Just hold your finger down on a word and up pops the dictionary definition. I love this and use it all the time!! It is so convenient and I love being able to look up words I don't know while I am reading.
Okay, enough of me swooning over eReaders. Here is what you need to know!
For the Amazon Indie Author fan:
If you are a lover of indie romance such as Chloe Liese, RS Grey, Helena Hunting, or LJ Shen, you may want to consider Kindle and Kindle Unlimited. Many indie authors who publish through Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) will use KDP Select which will make their eBook exclusive to Amazon and the Kindle Platform. If you buy books on Amazon, want to subscribe to Kindle Unlimited, or have favorite authors who publish on KDP Select, your gonna want a Kindle. Here are two great options!
The Kindle Paperwhite
The Kindle Paperwhite is a great size, waterproof, has a touchscreen, connects to your Goodreads account, and you can access the Kindle store when you are on wifi or have the 3G version.
This is my personal favorite eReader. The touchscreen is super handy. I love that it connects to Goodreads and all of my highlighted passages show there as well. This kindle also has Bluetooth capability to play audiobooks! You can get it in 8gb or 32gb capacity. In all honesty, if you just plan to have books and not magazines or audiobooks, you will be just fine with 8gb storage. The battery on this baby lasts for weeks and I read on it DAILY!
The Kindle Oasis
The Kindle Oasis is a beautiful and sleek eReader. It is larger than the kindle paperwhite and has some upgraded features. It has page change buttons, an auto-dimming touchscreen that can change to a warmer shade (easier on the eyes), and is waterproof! While the larger size may not be as mobile as the paperwhite, the oasis has more front LEDs and the auto-dimming and adjustable warmth is a game-changer for readers. Honestly, the Oasis is BEAUTIFUL.
For the Library Lover:
If you are a library lover and plan to borrow most of your eBooks, I would recommend finding out how your library lends its eBooks. If they have ePub and MOBI file formats, your pretty set on picking any eReader. If they only lend ePubs through Overdrive (not supported on kindle devices), you will want to take a look at Kobo. Kobo has the best option as far library borrowing goes with the recent update that integrates Overdrive directly onto the eReader.
The Kobo Clara HD
The Kobo Clara HD is most similar to the Kindle Paperwhite and also features a touchscreen, color-changing screen to reduce blue light, and Overdrive integration. This has a similar battery life and storage as the Paperwhite but unfortunately, this one is not waterproof. I would definitely recommend this one if your main source of books is through the library or 3rd party retailers. This eReader supports many file types including: ePub, MOBI, and PDF.
There you have it!
There it is! These are my top 3 eReaders and a little bit about each of them. As you can tell, I am absolutely in love with my Kindle Paperwhite and so so happy with it!
